In Nigeria and across Africa, cashew plantations and processing are significant agricultural ventures due to the high demand for cashew nuts both locally and globally. Cashew trees thrive in tropical climates and are cultivated extensively in countries like Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Nigeria is one of the top producers of cashew nuts in Africa, with an annual production that has been steadily increasing. In 2020, Nigeria produced approximately 260,000 metric tons of cashew nuts, contributing significantly to the global supply.
Cashew nut processing involves several stages, starting with harvesting ripe cashew apples and extracting the nuts from their shells. After drying and peeling, the nuts are graded based on size and quality. Processing adds value to the nuts, making them ready for export or local markets. Nigeria’s processing capacity has been growing, with several processing plants established to meet both local demand and export requirements. This sector provides employment opportunities for many, particularly in rural areas where cashew farms are located.
The profitability of cashew farming lies in its ability to generate income year-round, with cashew trees producing nuts annually once they mature (around 3-5 years). Farmers can earn significant revenue per hectare, with yields varying based on factors like soil quality, farming practices, and climate.
Proposed Capacity:
The company aims to establish a 50-hectare cashew plantation and a modern cashew nut processing facility with a capacity of processing 2 - 3 tons per day, operating 8 hours daily, to meet the increasing global demand for high-quality cashew products.
